"Here is a new design I have just completed. It is based on the famous Tapped Horn as discussed by Tom Danley. This design offers many advantages in terms of efficiency compared to a reflex but also mainly in its "musicality". The idea for this box came to me after discovering Tom Danley's MiniTH, I ahve always been impressed by its products. IN NO WAY is this design a MiniTH copy(I don't even know the internals of the MINITH anyway). This plan is 100% original, based around a specific driver and the design is very close to the MINITH performances. The inspiration for the design was to make a small enclosure, with a inexpensive, but quality 12" (DIY spirit) able to compete with a 15" reflex. The enclosure is based on the Precision Device PD.12SB30.Efficiency is 100.5dB 1w/1m in Half-space (2pi), cutoff 52hz at -3dB. I recommend 15mm seing how small the box is, should make for a very light cabinet adapted to mobile djs, or bigger PA with multiple enclosures..." by gekomusic94 I would like make this project... (Sorry for my bad english i'm italian) Could i use this project for outdoor small partyes?? And what is the SPL could it make??
Please answer at my question... by gekomusic94 Ciao!!! Sono contento di non essere l'unico! Secondo te quanto SPL posso ricavare da quel progetto?? E per che musica sarebbe adatto??
by giveortake from my rusty italian I get:

thanks mikey by ravs hi give and take
could you please post hr inputs. i want to try it with my 12 thanks ravs be a vegeterian by mautopsy Just got the panels cut for two, start assembly tomorrow. I Will try to get some pictures up. One question tho- is the polarity reversed for drivers in this cab?
by mautopsy Nicky- It's cold here in michigan too... gotta build in the basement when the kids are gone.
TO THE DESIGNER- GREAT CAB DESIGN!!! I have built a pair of these and loaded them with some cheaper drivers, these to be exact-> http://www.cheaplights.com/cart/page81.html (the first 12" on the page). I tested one after i got it together and was impressed, then i built the other and was pretty much amazed. This pair was not only louder than my 18 reflex cabs, but also much clearer and more defined. I am not a math whiz, nor do i know how to use most of these modeling programs, but this driver seems well suited in this cab. (TS parameters are impossible to get, have tried for weeks, and i dont know how to get my own.) Plan on building two more, as i have another pair of these drivers. thanks to the designer! by lenny b would really love to build 4 of theese for hire outs.can only afford cheap drivers to though so i'm gonna try either fane sovereign 12 -500 lf or 12 -300,although the 300 has the closer paremeters to the pd strangely.i thaught it would have been the other way round.was a bit scared of building them and putting wrong drivers in but after what you said mautopsy i can't wait.will post pics and you tube vids when finished.bigup!!:@)
by mautopsy it seems that it is a very forgiving design ,and a range of drivers might work. Very easy build, home depot did all my cuts, and assembles very easy.
by sonicxtasy Out of curiosity how would it work if you increased the entire cabinet 25% and used a 15" instead of the 12"? Longer horn path should go lower. Could someome work it out and sim it in hornresp. I assume that it would only work well with the right driver but it might be worth the test.

There are already designs available for 15" drivers just do a google. Tony by mautopsy TDA Audio has a bunch of TH designs 15" and 12" I believe. and i think Stapier has some too

thanks mikey From the designer: "Concerning the 45 deg:if it is about the "corner pieces" the MTH-30 does not have, 2 opinions: -some think they are vital -some think the opposite, as can been witnessed with url=http://www.volvotreter.de/th.htm]http://www.volvotreter.de/th.htm, or with Danley's (which patent doesn't contain any). My position is that up to a specific size, "corner pieces" can help reduce some velocity trouble.Unfortunately I have not performed test proving it. One thing is certain though many proven design TH or TQWT seem to perform without the need of any." -sorry for the approximate translation english is not my mother tongue- by cudds many thanks give or take! i wil post pics of the 4 i'm building next week.
cheers mikey edit... ![]() by wade Hi all, newb here about to get into this plan.
I need a small light (ish) sub box that has focused, punchy lows for little club type live gigs, and this looks to fit the bill. Couple issues for me, one specific and one general 1) The driver listed is a UK manufacturer, which creates all kind of problems for me not the least of which is the expense of getting one here, does anyone have an idea what Eminence/JBL/EV/B&C/ etc etc might yield a good result? I have a relationship with B&C, but even then they are still kinda spendy.... 2) I note the plans assume a lot of knowledge that I don't have. I'm very good with making things work, but I need some place to start in terms of the simple mechanics of building boxes. For example, I know I want to use Baltic Birch, but I don't know if I should be screwing them together or gluing, or where to put the handles, how to finish the box (love to have some sort of coating that would withstand some ass-whipping), jacks mounting, corners/hardware etc etc. Any pointers? Thanx - WB by cudds that is a very good guide to get you going. the other option for wood is MDF, although if you plan on touring and having crew fling your boxes on and off trucks regularly then birch is the answer.
regarding the driver, PD have distributors world wide so it may be possible to get the 12sb30 where you are. screwing and glueing is a must, read that guide you posted carefully and it will give you all the info you need to build this box. by cudds cool! any idea what this does to excursion?
i like the idea of the modular horn although you are doubling the size of the box for a little more low end response. makes it not so compact anymore. would multiples couple like FLH's, or does this remain a typical tapped horn? by mautopsy Nice bitzo, i happen to have two of these cabs sitting around.....and some extra wood.....maybe some time. I like this because you can stack a commercial 12" or 15" Midtop on top, and this raises it a bit more, and we don't have to use those silly tripod stands
by bitzo "Cudds" wrote:

![]() may be too much for pd12sb30 or it's a peak to peak measurement? akabak manual isn't so clear.... "Cudds" wrote:

cheers, bitzo by mautopsy Bitzo, any ideas for clamping this together? Don't think we need to be as crazy as rog's modular design. Would case clamps hold this, or even the weight of a mid top on top of it?
by bitzo Some scketeches for clamping....you have only to drill some holes in the horn mouth then put some tnut. On the mth30's frontal pan panel don't drill for all the depth just to screw in the stuff (I don't know the english name) in the photo, then bolt. However ye olde ratchet strips may be, can work good.
Also...in the addon mouth some braces would be nice. ![]() by wade Getting ready to build 2 of these, where do you guys like to get your hardware (jack plates, corners, handles, speaker cups etc) ?
by wade Yeh, I've been looking there, kinda all over the map, that's why I was diggin for better options, but it could work.....did you ever take pics of the ones you built, and are you pleased?
Thanx.... by mautopsy love em, i used the 12" drivers from cheaplights.com and they sound good.
still gotta do some finishing on the cabs, but here is a picture by wade Cool!
@Tony - nah, SoCal, I'm sure there's great places around here for this stuff, I just don't know where... by wade WHat does anyone think about sticking an Eminence Lab 12 in this box? That thing is a pretty great sub woofer, but maybe not in this box....? Or maybe so....
by mautopsy STACKING QUESTIONS:
Ok all the smart guys out there. does it get better if the horns are coulped like the photo i have drawn (mspaint)? or would they better benifit with the driver near the ground, or up. Height is not my concern, just wondering what is the best approach by cudds afaik tapped horns do not couple like a front loaded horn. so there's nothing to be gained by stacking them a particular way

So should the mouth open near the floor, as to use the floor as a horn extension? by xoc1 "MAutopsy" wrote:

The PD 12sb30 has a good Xmax for a tapped horn (7mm) and according to hornresp will reach x-max at about 46Volts which is 265W at 8 ohms. No one has mentioned that you will need a hi pass filter and it will probably be to be at least 40hz. by mautopsy "Xoc1" wrote:

I use these drivers http://www.cheaplights.com/cart/page81.html (the first 12" on the page) they are Cheap, work great and are very similar to the Radian 2312s. I do not use a high pass. these cabs are rather great, allowing a hell of a sound that one man can set up. I Use two currently and may build two more, but my Servodrives want to get out and see action as well by rizzardo Hi Guys,
first, excuse me for my bad english second, I'm searching a cutlist for this design: i haven't software to draw it then I can't realize this project. can you help me? if anybody has draw it, can post it? I think that I can be very useful for all !!! thank a lot by gekomusic94 My MTH-30 Sketchup Model
:P.S.: If you want this Sketchup Model please PM Me! by cozy pillow How high does this cab go to with the PD driver. It says from 42Hz. would it make a good kick cab?
by bee if you look at the first photo after the plan, you can see what and where to add bracing...... hope this helps.
by cuttaboi Anyone know how low 1/2 will go in 1pi? also how high is everyone crossing these?

i would say no too suitable: Not too flat Very low displacement limited power by keyvin Hi fellow bass builders,
After a few months of testing and gigging with 2 MTH30 cabs, I decided to build 4. Two of them are active, supplied with 2channel Hypex plate amps. For the tops I use DB F12 cabs. During testing I compared the 2 mth30 to one EAW600 (215) of a friend. The eaw has rounder (basreflex) lows and throws omni, the MTH30 have a strict cardoid-like pattern, and they have more output on axis, certainly 10m distance. I'd say up to 20meters you have usable coverage in my opinion. I tested them on a bridged Crown K2 (2400w), but felt like that amp (compared to the hypex plates) has such an enormous 40hz output, even with processing it shakes the woofers up to xmax way easier than the hypex do (at 'same' volume off course). As these cabs are not really made to provide hefty 40hz, I decided not to stress 'm that much, the Hypex amps do a good job at that. Most gigs I play (piano and vocs) and provide sound are quite small (1piano and 1guitar round 100people), but sometimes gigs turn out (arriving at the place) to be outside for 600people (in setting with drummer and sometimes a bass player). So I needed a system that's easily transportable and provides output for those occasions. In my previous setup I blew up my woofers three times over... ![]() For the small gigs I'm happy to work without a heavy amp rack and have extra mains power output on the back of the subs. I haven't had the chance to hear the new system outside with drums, but judging the output while playing CD's I think it'll work fine. They still need grills tho... ![]() by cudds here's a few i knocked up before xmas... they have proven to be pretty good bins for drum and bass. love how portable they are.
![]() ![]() ![]() i'm liking the use of the active module in the above post. are these available in the uk? the mth30 is so light that it could stand to have the extra weight of the module built in, doing away with amp rack, making them even more portable. that way one could fit everything for a little dj gig into the back of an estate. 4xmth, 2xtops, cdj coffin, poles, cables etc, maybe even a few lights! by keyvin Hi cudds, great job on your cabs! Did you use four clamps to secure the grill? No shaking?
The hypex amps should be available in the UK too, I believe their webshop sends internationally. They are very lightweight BTW. I built them into the wheelplates. From my experience these cabs work best in larger environments, in small pubs I've had some strange issues with lots of bass on stage, without really developing elsewhere (there it just felt like pressure, but not really like bass). That was with two cabs, 4 should give more. Caused by the horn effect? Is this familiar to anyone? by bee where the cabs sitting on the stage, or on the floor infront of the stage..... and was the stage constructed with a wooden floor or a concrete floor.....
by cudds "keyvin" wrote:

yes lots of shaking! it was a complete blunder not installing wooden mounts for the grills, but i was in a rush. they will be changed before their next outing. by keyvin It was a portable (wood with alu rigging) stage, around 50-60cm heigh. The subs were placed right next to it, with front of the sub in line with front of stage...
by bee it could of been rearward base waves echoing under the staging..... Ive heard this issue when ive see people putting there subs on the stage area.

Hi. Answer is boundary and cancellation modes. This subs behave like horns, except there is nothing to be gained by extending horn path. Good explanation can be found here:http://billfitzmaurice.info/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=398 by resonance The overall dimensions of the MTH-30 seem to be 68 x 34 x 57.7 cm.
According to the construction plans the outer panels are included in those dimensions. However, the width of 34 cm can't be right, because the 12SB30 won't fit in a space of just 31 cm. What's the matter with this? Is the overall width 37 cm while the height and the depth are correct? Help me out, please! Thanks! ![]() by gekomusic94 The overall width is 37cm, while the height is 68 and the depth is 60,7 (All with 15mm thick panels).
Best Regards, Giacomo. ![]() by resonance Okay, thank you!!
So the description is not completely adequate, I assume. And I suppose you are sure about it, having built at least one, but the depth is 60,7 yes? When I look at the construction plan, I can't find external panels to make the depth 3 cm larger than the 57,7 cm. For it says the height is 65, but then without the top and bottom. With the depth it really says 57,7 when I look at it by cudds the plans are correct. outside dimensions of the cab are ...depth 57.7cm width 68cm and height 37cm
by gekomusic94 Sorry, i've made a mistake
The external depth is 57,7 and not 60,7 .Best Regards, Giacomo. by resonance Okay, thank you!

by cudds i have a/b tested them although the tham15 was loaded with a driver that does not perform as well as the specified b&c 15tbx100. there wasnt much in it but can believe that with the b&c driver the tham15 would wipe the floor with the mth. i dont think there is anything to be gained in using them together as the tham15 will play just as high as the mth.

If anybody did that, say what was the difference between them ... I know that from the simulation , the MTH is way more louder, higher SPL. I;m interested if this is exactly the result in real life... The same with Cubo 12 against an 18" in BR, but in real life compared. Thanx a lot ! ! I;m waiting for your replys by kentech 4 cabs MTH 30 with what loudspeaker ? Pd 12DB30 ?
Have u compared 1 by 1 with an 18" BR speaker ? If u did, with what 18" woofer ? thanx by mautopsy goldwood's. yes a/b tested. leaves most single 18" bass reflex in the dust. there is no cubo 12 or mth 30 showdown. the mth30 was designed for a certain driver, and a few others work in it. the cubo was designed to accept a wide range of drivers, ask the designer about what drivers you plan on using and he will help you out.
